水中捞月的典故

孙悟空想超脱生死轮回，便穿大洲、过大洋到处去寻找。最后拜在菩提祖师门下，每日和师兄弟们学经论道，扫地锄园，不觉过了六、七年。

一日，祖师问悟空：“你想学什么？”悟空说：“但凭尊祖教诲。”

祖师问：“教你请仙扶鸾、趋吉避凶，如何？”悟空问：“可得长生么？”祖师说：“不能！”悟空说：“不学！不学！”

祖师问：“教你看经念佛、朝真降圣，如何？”悟空问：“可得长生吗？”祖师说：“不能！”悟空说：“不学！不学！”

祖师问：“教你守谷无为、打坐持斋，如何？”悟空问：“可得长生么？”祖师说：“不能！”悟空说：“不学！不学！”

祖师问：“教你采阴补阳、打鼎炼丹，如何？”悟空问：“也得长生么？”祖师说：“如想长生，却如同‘水中捞月’。”悟空问：“怎么叫做‘水中捞月’？”祖师说：“月亮在天空中，水中只有月亮的影子，虽然看得见，只是无法去捞，到底只能是空想罢了。”悟空说：“也不学！不学！”

祖师看悟空意志坚定，就把长生不老的方法传给了悟空。
