寒雨秦邮夜泊船，南湖新涨水连天。
风流不见秦淮海，寂寞人间五百年。
高邮雨泊创作背景
1660年（清顺治十七年）农历三月诗人赴扬州推官任，途经高邮（属江苏）泊船于高邮南湖，触景生情，遥想出生于高邮的北宋大词人秦观而有此作。
高邮雨泊鉴赏
诗前两句写景。首句中“秦邮”即高邮，据祝穆《方舆胜览》：“高邮，一名秦邮，秦因高邮置邮传为高邮亭。”“寒雨”为秋雨，乃暗示经高邮之季节，“夜”则点明雨泊的具体时间。首句写诗人于深秋寒雨潇潇之夜泊船于秦邮，此乃破题。次句则进而把高邮雨泊地点具体化为“南湖”，即高邮南部的武安湖。“新涨水连天”描绘出此时由于“寒雨”不停，南湖水势为之涨起，放眼望去烟波浩渺，水天相连，难以分辨的情景，从而开拓出一个凄清迷蒙的意境。
夜雨中的南湖既凄迷又空寂，看不到一条渔船，一个人影，自然空间的清寂无人引起了诗人心理空间的寂寞之感。于是乃有“风流不见秦淮海，寂寞人间五百年”之感叹。此时，面对高邮南湖，作为一代诗坛才人更感寂寞的是五百年间的文坛没有再出现像高邮秦淮海这样才华超群的词人。淮海为秦观号淮海居士的简称，诗人称“寂寞人间五百年”，当然是夸饰之言，旨在推崇秦观在文坛的重要地位；又，王士禛词风格亦以婉约绵邈见长，与秦观相近，因此才有这种惺惺惜惺惺的仰慕之情。诗人于慨叹不见风流秦淮海的同时，亦暗寓步武秦观，欲打破文坛“寂寞”之意。此乃诗人“情寄”之所在。
王士禛论诗继承钟嵘“观古今胜语，多非补假，皆由直寻”（《诗品序》）的观点，称“五字清晨登陇首，羌无故实使人思”（《仿元遗山论诗绝句》），主张即景会心，直抒性情，不用或少用典故。此诗即为这一观点的例证。

王士祯（1634—1711），原名王士禛，字子真、贻上，号阮亭，又号渔洋山人，人称王渔洋，谥文简。新城（今山东桓台县）人，常自称济南人，清初杰出诗人、学者、文学家。博学好古，能鉴别书、画、鼎彝之属，精金石篆刻，诗为一代宗匠，与朱彝尊并称。书法高秀似晋人。康熙时继钱谦益而主盟诗坛。论诗创神韵说。早年诗作清丽澄淡，中年以后转为苍劲。擅长各体，尤工七绝。但未能摆脱明七子摹古馀习，时人诮之为“清秀李于麟”，然传其衣钵者不少。好为笔记，有《池北偶谈》、《古夫于亭杂录》、《香祖笔记》等，然辨驳议论多错愕、失当。
